CRUSADER’S IRON MACE, 13th CENTURY

2 3/8" height, a cylindrical socket with capped end and six angled flanges. See Nicolle pl.251b. A horseman’s mace with wood haft would have originally been 22-25” length. Its relatively small size reflects the lightweight of the protection worn by the Saracens who sacrificed bodily protection for speed and agility. Excellent excavated condition.
